Know More

Cymbopogon, commonly called Lemongrass, is a genus of more than 50 tropical plant species in the Grass family (also called Poaceae family). Some sub-species from the Lemongrass genus, especially Cymbopogon flexuosus and Cymbopogon citratus, have long been used in Southeast Asia for folk medicine and for culinary purposes. Indigenous to tropical regions such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and Australia, Lemongrass is characterized by a distinctive fresh fragrance that is citrusy, lemony, and earthy. Cymbopogon derives its name from the Greek words ‘kymbe’ (boat) and ‘pogon’ (beard), suggesting the hairy spikelets on the plant's boat-shaped leaves called spathes. It is thought that the popularity of Lemongrass Essential Oil began after the display of Citronella Essential Oil, a close relative of the Lemongrass plant, at the 1951 World Fair. However, some reports suggest that the Philippines might have exported the oil as early as the 17th century but it was kept secret. In 1905 a researcher from Sri Lanka, J.F. Jovit, brought back lemongrass plant from South India to his country to conduct research. The more he learned about the plant and the properties of its extracted oil, Lemongrass Essential Oil, word of the numerous benefits of the plant spread worldwide. The first commercial production and distribution of Lemongrass Essential Oil was in 1947 in Florida and Haiti, with India currently leading the production and accounting for ~80% Lemongrass Essential Oil production.

Lemongrass was traditionally used for culinary and medicinal purposes. Due to its ability to reduce fevers, Lemongrass earned the title ‘fever grass’ and was used to produce a local drink in South India and Sri Lanka called ‘fever tea’ to treat fever as well as diarrhea, stomach aches, irregular menstruation, and skin infections. Today Lemongrass Essential Oil is one of the top 10 Essential Oils in the market and is widely used in aromatherapy, health & wellness, beauty, and culinary industry. Lemongrass Essential Oil promotes deep relaxation, alleviates stress, uplifts mood, and reduces anxiety. With its lemony, refreshing, and calming aroma, it is an excellent choice for diffusing in your home. It doubles up as a great natural and safe deodorizer that freshens the room and eliminates unpleasant odors when diffused. Lemongrass Essential Oil plays an instrumental role in promoting scalp health, controlling dandruff, and promoting hair growth. Rich in anti-oxidants, Lemongrass Essential Oil offers potent skin protective, skin regenerating, and anti-aging properties, and is a great addition to your daily face oil or cream. It is also known to help relieve joint pains and ease sore muscles owning to its owing to its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. With its invigorating aroma and uplifting properties, Lemongrass Essential Oil is a popular fragrance choice for lotions, oils, creams, soaps, shampoos, sprays, and candle. On account of its various benefits and uses, Lemongrass Essential Oil is a subject of extensive scientific research.
